Training you Rescue Dog is vital from day one! Rescue dogs or puppies may have been mistreated or may simply have bad behaviour so it’s important that you get expert help as soon as possible.

We have trained Rescue dogs for many years in Yorkshire and this experience means we can deal with the many problems you are likely to encounter.

It’s tempting to put your Rescue dog’s bad behaviour down to its bad experience and tolerate barking, biting, pulling on the lead, and aggression for a time. This is not acceptable and unless these behaviour are not dealt with quickly your life will be a misery. Your dog needs stability and training and a routine provides this

At Leeds Dog School we train your Rescue dog and you! We believe that one to one training with you and your dog at your home is the best way of training and stopping dog bad behaviour. This allows us to concentrate on your specific problems. All this means that you can follow up our training and make sure your dog does not slip back into its old ways.

It's vital to get them on the right track as soon as possible. Dogs learn quickly what behaviour is acceptable but they have to be taught.

We visit your home and we will go for a walk with you and your dog or puppy to ensure that you know exactly how to correct bad behaviour and to reward good behaviour. Ignoring dog bad behaviour is wrong it should always be corrected when behaving badly and only good behaviour should be rewarded.

Poor recall is probably the most common dog bad behaviour that we come across. It makes it almost impossible to let your dog or puppy off the lead on a walk. The owner is constantly anxious that it will simply ignore them.  We can teach you a few techniques that solve this and make going for a walk a pleasure.

Pulling on the lead is uncomfortable for you and the for your dog. Most dogs unless properly trained are likely to pull on the lead and this makes going for a walk an unpleasant experience. Owners have often been advised to buy a harness. We do not recommend them unless you want your dog trained to pull a sledge like a husky! Similarly, choke chains are positively dangerous. We offer a number of methods which solve this permanently and easily.

Our objective in dog training is to train our clients to control their dog or puppy. We are training the owner almost as much as the dog or puppy. Until you have the right techniques jumping up will always be a problem. Once your dog realises that you are in charge, this kind of behaviour stops. We will teach you the simple techniques quickly and easily.

Aggression in a dog whether to other dogs or to people is totally unacceptable. We have to teach our clients to be assertive and to know how to correct the dog to prevent aggression happening in the first place. Our training is not theoretical but practical and we give you practical techniques to take control.

Some trainers believe that giving a dog treats is the best way to train but in our opinion relying on treats exclusively just does not work. Your dog may learn how behave but only does it at because there's a treat at the end of it and many times treats just stop working. Essentially you are bribing the dog to behave properly.Bad behaviour by a dog makes an owner’s life a misery. Our dog training solves problems with bad behaviour as this is our speciality. Many of the problems are very common and we work with your dog and just as importantly, with you at your home or on a walk, to solve the problems.

  • Stop pulling on the lead
  • Stop lunging at other dogs
  • Stop barking at dogs & people
  • Stop jumping up at people
  • Stop aggression
  • Stop running away and not returning
  • Stop constant barking
  • Stop barking at the door

What problem dog behaviour do you deal with

If your dog is, jumping up at people or you, stealing food, destructive, running out of the door,  barking constantly, aggressive to humans or dogs and more … you need home 1-2-1 home training. Two hours is usually enough to cure most problems because we train you to take control and then you don’t need us anymore.

What areas of Yorkshire do you cover

We train throughout Yorkshire. We come to your home wherever you live in Yorkshire and work with you and your dog or puppy on a 1-2-1 basis.

What breeds do you train

We train all breeds of dog from "designer" dogs such as the cockapoo or labradoodle through to working dogs such as spaniels and terriers. We also specialise in larger dogs such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, all Mastiffs.

My dog is terrible when I go for a walk can you help

Pulling on the lead , running away and refusing to return, and barking and lunging at other dogs  are the most common problems we deal with. We go for a walk with you and we always choose a busy park and usually stop this in an hour.

What training methods do you use

Unlike some trainers, we only use “treats” in some circumstances particularly with high level obedience training. They are over used and eventually do not work with problem behaviour. Our method is correction and then reward with praise. Enticing or “bribing” a dog is counter-productive and they soon spot how to manipulate the situation. The most important training, however, is the owner training so that you can control your dog.

Do you have puppy classes

The short answer is NO. We simply do not think they work. There are too a many puppies and they just want to play with each other and are totally distracted. The owners cannot possibly get individual attention in an hour with 8 or 10 or more people in a class. We only offer 1-2-1 puppy training in your home because it’s quicker, more effective, and cheaper!

At first I was nervous about my dog Kobi's training. Then after seeing the high level of expertise from Rob I knew from that moment that he was highly professional and trustworthy.
From an instant my dog was set straight by Rob in such a calm and controlled way. I have had five sessions with Rob and the amount of progress my dog has made is unreal.
I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants an obedient dog.
    He certainly knows his stuff!

Ruth visited us to help with our rescue dog who has issues with people coming to the house. She gave us one command to use when he reacted and within 15 minutes he was learning that his actions were resulting in him being corrected. We are confident going forward that within a few weeks of using this technique his behaviour will have improved considerably. Thanks for your help & knowledge Ruth.

Angus (my 13 week old Lab puppy) and
I had our first training session with Ruth yesterday.
Ruth is clearly highly knowledgeable and experienced with our canine friends...her style, guidance, tips and suggestions were all both welcome and useful.
For example, Angus began the session very wary of his lead but, after a few minutes of Ruth’s teaching and support, he was trotting around the garden at my side...and I’m pleased to say that he happily repeated the act again this morning!
I’d certainly recommend Ruth very highly.

Rob has done three sessions with our Doberman puppy Kobi. From not wanting to go out of the door he is walking on a lead, walking to heel and sitting on command. I can not recommend Robs skill and commitment highly enough. If you want a well behaved disciplined dog - Rob is your man

Our one year old German shepherd was causing us a great deal of stress. Pulling on the lead and barking at everything that walked past our house. We contacted Leeds Dog school and within a week, we had an appointment and an hour later Maximus is great! Using the techniques we were taught, it will help us a live a stress free life. Within minutes of Ruth turning up she had Hardy calmed down and doing as he was told. She stopped his jumping and mouthing no problem at all. Taking him for a walk will be much more pleasurable now as Ruth showed us how to control Hardy around other dogs and people, then topped it off by showing us how to get him to drop the ball, he loves chasing the ball and bringing it back but hated giving it back 😂

Thanks Ruth the hour spent with you will definitely improve our lives with Hardy

A lovely lady called Ruth came to my house to help sort out some behavioural issues with my 8 month old wheaten terrier, he is very boisterous when greeting people and on the lead. Ruth was amazing, within 5 mins with her calm manner Eddie had calmed down and was under her control. It is still a work in progress for us but I feel I now have the tools to be more confident and in charge and am seeing positive results.

Today we had a first visit from Rob to train our Flat Coated Retriever Mack. Within the first 5 minutes Rob had unbelievably changed his behaviour of barking and jumping up and mounting. Mack was also obedient and calm. With his expert guidance of both Mack and us as his owners ,we are thrilled with the incredible results so far . We are so pleased that we contacted Rob.

Ruth came to see us to help stop our 8 week old puppy from biting our hands and feet. In just 1 hour she showed us a really helpful correction technique that he is gradually responding very well to. Ruth was happy to talk through any other issues/aspects and gave us great advice and support overall. Many thanks Ruth and Leeds Dog School, I am sure we'll be calling on you for help again in the near future!
