Obedience is vital in your dog.Having an obedient dog makes ownership of your pet an absolute pleasure! At Leeds Dog School we will train your dog to a high level in obedience. We also believe that this should involve the owner at every stage and so our training is one to one with you and your dog. It’s important that your dog obeys your commands and we work with you until you are confident in controlling your dog.
Below are the main areas of obedience but of course we tailor our training to your requirements as we do not believe that “one size fits all ” when it comes to training. Owners with obedient pets get more satisfaction and have a stronger bond with their pet. Having a dog that is well trained, obedient, happy, relaxed, responsive and easy for you to manage means you will get more pleasure from dog ownership.
A well-trained dog is safer to have around family and friends, and is at a lower risk than an uncontrollable dog. A dog must come back when it’s called in the face of dangerous situations such as near a busy road.
THE OBEDIENCE TRAINING
- Heel Work –walk to heel on the lead
Owner training and participation in obedience training is just as important as training the dog. The owner must be aware of the commands and learn to control the dog.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If your dog is, jumping up at people or you, stealing food, destructive, running out of the door, barking constantly, aggressive to humans or dogs and more … you need home 1-2-1 home training. Two hours is usually enough to cure most problems because we train you to take control and then you don’t need us anymore.
We train throughout Yorkshire. We come to your home wherever you live in Yorkshire and work with you and your dog or puppy on a 1-2-1 basis.
We train all breeds of dog from "designer" dogs such as the cockapoo or labradoodle through to working dogs such as spaniels and terriers. We also specialise in larger dogs such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, all Mastiffs.
Pulling on the lead , running away and refusing to return, and barking and lunging at other dogs are the most common problems we deal with. We go for a walk with you and we always choose a busy park and usually stop this in an hour.
Unlike some trainers, we only use “treats” in some circumstances particularly with high level obedience training. They are over used and eventually do not work with problem behaviour. Our method is correction and then reward with praise. Enticing or “bribing” a dog is counter-productive and they soon spot how to manipulate the situation. The most important training, however, is the owner training so that you can control your dog.
The short answer is NO. We simply do not think they work. There are too a many puppies and they just want to play with each other and are totally distracted. The owners cannot possibly get individual attention in an hour with 8 or 10 or more people in a class. We only offer 1-2-1 puppy training in your home because it’s quicker, more effective, and cheaper!
We have just hired Rob to help train our rescue Chihuahua with barking at people entering the home. He explained his methods and how to implement them. He was very knowledgeable and professional. We didn't feel rushed at all in our session and it has certainly helped. Would definetly recommend and use again if needed.Richard M 31 May 2020
My dog was been aggressive with other dogs when out walking and we couldn’t get her walking with us she was always pulling however after 1 session with Rob she changed massively. He shows you how to change the behaviour and let’s you try it out yourself. He also sends you useful videos and is there to call if you need any extra help.levi eggleston 23 May 2020
Having recently bought a working line doberman I found training in the usual manner I have found successful with my previous dogs was not working due to the high drive of the dog, he was not getting the mental as well physical exercise he was bred to need (as explained to me by Rob) I Googled doberman trainers and Rob dye came up I looked through the information available on past training and reviews and decided to give Leeds dog school a call, Rob came out to us and explained both the differences in breeding and how training should reflect this, we had a 1 to 1 session, he was very friendly and informative my dog seemed to take to him immediately and was very receptive to the form of training and techniques he used, I have been left with a huge amount of information and gained confidence in how to both train and handle my dog and options on what route I want to take for future training .John Coward 17 May 2020
Rob came to us today to help us with our 7 month old Labrador who was jumping up and pulling me off my feet when out on walks. I cannot believe how quick he corrected his behaviour and taught us how to continue his training. We have just been out for the best walk with him ever, he is like a different dog and it was lovely to see him enjoy it while being so well behaved. It’s good to know we’ve got all the videos and support from Rob going forward. Thank you so much, highly recommendedJill Greatbatch 14 May 2020
I have a very reactive and aggressive doberman to humans and animals...within an hour of seeing Rob he had given me the tools and knowledge I need to rectify my dog....whilst with Rob my dog showed a complete change in demeanour for the better. I feel more positive going forward and am looking forward to getting more knowledge off Rob as my dog progresses. Ive sent my dog on residentials and had behaviourists and paid £1000’s for training. Nothing has worked thus far....until Rob seemed to have the magic touch today. Cant thank him enough.Rizwana Shaikh 05 May 2020
Super session with Ruth thank you! Supportive advice and manageable strategies to support with mouthing and early training. Feel much more confident managing our little bundle of energy. It feels good to have someone on the end of a text if we have any further questions or issues. Would highly recommend.Zoe Brown 27 Mar 2020
We had the first of three scheduled lessons with Rob today and it was great. I took my three-year-old Rottweiler who was lunging for cars, people, dogs and cyclists, just a generally reactive dog who needed what seemed like a lot of work. In the hour we spent with Rob we were provided with an appropriate collar for training, told how to correct her behaviors and taught an effective way to communicate with my dog. We saw improvement straight away. I can't wait to see how far we can go with another two sessions.Sam Pollitt 19 Mar 2020
Thank you very much to Ruth for all your help with our basset hound, Maggie. Almost instantly we saw a difference in Maggie's behaviour on walks and in the house, and have gained knowledge and techniques to help us going forward. It was a pleasure working with Ruth and would highly recommend to anyone looking for help/assistance with their dog. Thank you again 🙂 Josh, Georgia, and MaggieJosh Goldsbrough 19 Mar 2020
I received a telephone response within an hour of making an online request. Leeds Dog School was very helpful and gave advice straight away to combat an aggressive dog situation. I was filled with confidence after speaking to the Leeds Dog School. They gave reassurance and I was happy with the advice given.Natalie 11 Mar 2020
We have a Caucasian Shephard cross that has been getting a bit too big for his boots now that he's about a year old, generally playing a bit too aggressively and not listening when he should be. Thoroughly impressed with the results even from just the initial excercises. Not only has Leeds Dog School given us the hands on tools to safely take charge and remain in control, but also provided a huge amount of links and videos with invaluable information that, to be honest, I wouldn't have found on my own.Jordan Stone 04 Mar 2020
Really friendly and helpful trainer. I'd absoultely recommend anyone give them a call if you're having an issue with your dogs. So happy to be able to do right by my lovely boy. Massive thanks again to Leeds Dog School!
Rob helped us with our 2 year old Cockapoo who was lunging and barking in an aggressive way to other dogs when out walking. Within minutes he had shown us how to correct her behaviours and we passed about 20 dogs no problem! The experience was truly amazing and very emotional! We now know how to cope with this situation and can at last feel confident again about walking our beautiful girl in open spaces. We cannot thank Rob enough and we would thoroughly recommend him! Thank you Rob.Vanessa Sawyer 14 Feb 2020
Ruth came round today to help with my two rescue dogs that wouldn’t stop barking when they saw other dogs, they also had a tendency to pull on the lead. Ruth spent an hour with us and by the end it was like we had two completely different dogs, she controlled the barking and no more pulling on the lead! Anyone looking for a dog trainer I highly recommend these guys they are amazing! Thanks again 🙂Natalie Stewart 20 Jan 2020
