LEEDS DOG SCHOOL STOPPING BAD BEHAVIOUR

Many owners have a mistaken belief that dogs should somehow know “naturally” how to behave well. The truth is that “behaving well” is a human concept: dogs can’t be expected to know the difference between “good” and “bad dog behaviour”. They need to be trained to behave in a way that their owners want them to behave. Simply saying "bad dog" is pointless as the dog has no idea what you mean.

At Leeds Dog School we train your dog and you! We believe that one to one training with you and your dog at your home is the best way of training and stopping dog bad behaviour. This allows us to concentrate on your specific problems. All this means that you can follow up our training and make sure your dog does not slip back into its old ways.

This training is probably more important for your new puppy as it’s vital to get them on the right track as soon as possible.Puppies learn quickly what behaviour is acceptable but they have to be taught.

We visit your home and we will go for a walk with you and your dog or puppy to ensure that you know exactly how to correct bad behaviour and to reward good behaviour. Ignoring dog bad behaviour is wrong it should always be corrected when behaving badly and only good behaviour should be rewarded.

BAD BEHAVIOUR WE CAN STOP

YOU CANNOT STOP BAD BEHAVIOUR WITH A TREAT-IT DOES NOT WORK!

Some trainers believe that giving a dog treats is the best way to train but in our opinion relying on treats exclusively just does not work. Your dog may learn how behave but only does it at because there's a treat at the end of it and many times treats just stop working. Essentially you are bribing the dog to behave properly. Bad behaviour by a dog makes an owner’s life a misery. Our dog training solves problems with bad behaviour as this is our speciality. Many of the problems are very common and we work with your dog and just as importantly, with you at your home or on a walk, to solve the problems.

THE DANGEROUS DOGS ACT

Many dog owners are unaware that the Dangerous Dog Act concerns their dog as most people think it only refers to banned breeds such as Pit Bull type. This is simply not true as the law covers all breeds.

Section 3 makes it a CRIMINAL OFFENCE for any dog of any breed from Chihuahua to Great Dane to be dangerously out of control in a public place and the offence is committed both whoever was in charge of the dog and also the owner even if the owner was not there at the time.

What problem dog behaviour do you deal with

If your dog is, jumping up at people or you, stealing food, destructive, running out of the door,  barking constantly, aggressive to humans or dogs and more … you need home 1-2-1 home training. Two hours is usually enough to cure most problems because we train you to take control and then you don’t need us anymore.

What areas of Yorkshire do you cover

We train throughout Yorkshire. We come to your home wherever you live in Yorkshire and work with you and your dog or puppy on a 1-2-1 basis.

What breeds do you train

We train all breeds of dog from "designer" dogs such as the cockapoo or labradoodle through to working dogs such as spaniels and terriers. We also specialise in larger dogs such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, all Mastiffs.

My dog is terrible when I go for a walk can you help

Pulling on the lead , running away and refusing to return, and barking and lunging at other dogs  are the most common problems we deal with. We go for a walk with you and we always choose a busy park and usually stop this in an hour.

What training methods do you use

Unlike some trainers, we only use “treats” in some circumstances particularly with high level obedience training. They are over used and eventually do not work with problem behaviour. Our method is correction and then reward with praise. Enticing or “bribing” a dog is counter-productive and they soon spot how to manipulate the situation. The most important training, however, is the owner training so that you can control your dog.

Do you have puppy classes

The short answer is NO. We simply do not think they work. There are too a many puppies and they just want to play with each other and are totally distracted. The owners cannot possibly get individual attention in an hour with 8 or 10 or more people in a class. We only offer 1-2-1 puppy training in your home because it’s quicker, more effective, and cheaper!

Ruth came round today to help with my two rescue dogs that wouldn’t stop barking when they saw other dogs, they also had a tendency to pull on the lead. Ruth spent an hour with us and by the end it was like we had two completely different dogs, she controlled the barking and no more pulling on the lead! Anyone looking for a dog trainer I highly recommend these guys they are amazing! Thanks again 🙂

Ruth is a total expert! Before meeting her we didn’t even know that was possible to “cure” our dog anxiety.
With her help it is possible and totally doable with commitment and following her directions. All done respecting our dog personality.

Ruth came out to our home tonight to help with some basic obedience training for our 11 week old minature schnauzer. As a result of the 1 hour Ruth spent with us, we are more confident dog parents. We now have tools to manage our pups mischief and will be able to solidify his crate training. Ruth explained everything in a really easy to understand way, we are really happy and will certainly call on the dog school again if we need behavioural support further down the line.

Rob came over today to help us out with our 7 month old Border Collie who barked non- stop whenever someone came to our house. Within 30 minutes, he'd shown us the simple techniques to put us back into control. Rob is a credit to dog trainers - he has so much passion for his job, which must not even feel like work to him as he can just wants to pass on his knowledge. Thanks so much

We had Ruth out today to visit with our Rottie pup and in particular his biting. She was fantastic and definitely money well spent. Can’t believe the change in a day. There are so many conflicting viewpoints available online its hard to workout the best way to do things, having Ruth and Leeds dog school in took this away and give us a clear positive path to follow.
Would recommend to all new owners!

Highly recommend Leeds dog school! Ruth came out a couple weeks ago to help us with our Rottweiler puppy and she was amazing!! We had a very productive first session with Rob today, he obviously loves his dogs and made great progress with Flo, our very anxious 3 year old doberlady. We are looking forward to continuing to implement Rob’s techniques, which he explained and persevered with us until we understood what we need to do and why. Looking forward to having a calm confident gorgeous girl. The back-up video links and service is great.

Just finished my first session with Rob who was extremely knowledgable and passionate. Within 15 minutes he showed me how I can stop my German Shepherd barking and lunging at the door when someone knocks. Lots of practical, sensible strategies to use with Bella before we meet again next week. Rob made everything logical and clear, has good breed knowledge and left me with links to recommended videos on a range of training techniques and scenarios. Would highly recommend Rob and Leeds Dog School to anyone who is looking for balanced, effective training methods to use with their dog.

Ruth came to our house today to help us with our 6 month old jack Russell cross, Albert. He had been bullying the cat, ignoring his name when called, getting distracted by other dogs whilst out on his walks, and generally trying to rule the roost. Ruth demonstrated some amazing techniques and Albert responded really well after just one visit. I can not recommend Leeds Dog School, and Ruth, enough. Absolutely fantastic.
