Best Dog trainers in Leeds

Dog bad behaviour like human behaviour is a very complex subject but bad behaviour in a dog can make an owner’s life a misery. Solving problems with bad behaviour and aggression is our speciality at Leeds Dog School.

Many of the problems are very common and with work with your dog and just as importantly, with you, they can be solved.

Many owners have a mistaken belief that dogs should somehow know “naturally” how to behave well. The truth is that “behaving well” is a human concept: dogs can’t be expected to know the difference between “good” and “bad dog behaviour”. They need to be trained to behave in a way that their owners want them to behave. Simply saying "bad dog" is pointless as the dog has no idea what you mean.

At Leeds Dog School we train your dog and you! We believe that one to one training with you and your dog at your home is the best way of training and stopping dog bad behaviour. This allows us to concentrate on your specific problems. All this means that you can follow up our training and make sure your dog does not slip back into its old ways.

This training is probably more important for your new puppy as it’s vital to get them on the right track as soon as possible.Puppies learn quickly what behaviour is acceptable but they have to be taught.

We visit your home and we will go for a walk with you and your dog or puppy to ensure that you know exactly how to correct bad behaviour and to reward good behaviour. Ignoring dog bad behaviour is wrong it should always be corrected when behaving badly and only good behaviour should be rewarded.

Some trainers believe that giving a dog treats is the best way to train but in our opinion relying on treats exclusively just does not work. Your dog may learn how behave but only does it at because there's a treat at the end of it and many times treats just stop working. Essentially you are bribing the dog to behave properly. Bad behaviour by a dog makes an owner’s life a misery. Our dog training solves problems with bad behaviour as this is our speciality. Many of the problems are very common and we work with your dog and just as importantly, with you at your home or on a walk, to solve the problems.

Many dog owners are unaware that the Dangerous Dog Act concerns their dog as most people think it only refers to banned breeds such as Pit Bull type. This is simply not true as the law covers all breeds.

Section 3 makes it a CRIMINAL OFFENCE for any dog of any breed from Chihuahua to Great Dane to be dangerously out of control in a public place and the offence is committed both whoever was in charge of the dog and also the owner even if the owner was not there at the time.

We stop your puppy behaving badly!

What problem dog behaviour do you deal with

If your dog is, jumping up at people or you, stealing food, destructive, running out of the door,  barking constantly, aggressive to humans or dogs and more … you need home 1-2-1 home training. Two hours is usually enough to cure most problems because we train you to take control and then you don’t need us anymore.

What areas of Yorkshire do you cover

We train throughout Yorkshire. We come to your home wherever you live in Yorkshire and work with you and your dog or puppy on a 1-2-1 basis.

What breeds do you train

We train all breeds of dog from "designer" dogs such as the cockapoo or labradoodle through to working dogs such as spaniels and terriers. We also specialise in larger dogs such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, all Mastiffs.

My dog is terrible when I go for a walk can you help

Pulling on the lead , running away and refusing to return, and barking and lunging at other dogs  are the most common problems we deal with. We go for a walk with you and we always choose a busy park and usually stop this in an hour.

What training methods do you use

Unlike some trainers, we only use “treats” in some circumstances particularly with high level obedience training. They are over used and eventually do not work with problem behaviour. Our method is correction and then reward with praise. Enticing or “bribing” a dog is counter-productive and they soon spot how to manipulate the situation. The most important training, however, is the owner training so that you can control your dog.

Do you have puppy classes

The short answer is NO. We simply do not think they work. There are too a many puppies and they just want to play with each other and are totally distracted. The owners cannot possibly get individual attention in an hour with 8 or 10 or more people in a class. We only offer 1-2-1 puppy training in your home because it’s quicker, more effective, and cheaper!

We had Ruth out today to visit with our Rottie pup and in particular his biting. She was fantastic and definitely money well spent. Can’t believe the change in a day. There are so many conflicting viewpoints available online its hard to workout the best way to do things, having Ruth and Leeds dog school in took this away and give us a clear positive path to follow.
Would recommend to all new owners!

Highly recommend Leeds dog school! Ruth came out a couple weeks ago to help us with our Rottweiler puppy and she was amazing!! It has helped us so much to make sure we are bringing him up the right way. Ruth and Rob called in last night as a call back to make sure we felt comfortable and doing everything right! Very easy to deal with and always there if we need help!! Really couldn’t recommend them enough 🙂

We had a very productive first session with Rob today, he obviously loves his dogs and made great progress with Flo, our very anxious 3 year old doberlady. We are looking forward to continuing to implement Rob’s techniques, which he explained and persevered with us until we understood what we need to do and why. Looking forward to having a calm confident gorgeous girl. The back-up video links and service is great.

Just finished my first session with Rob who was extremely knowledgable and passionate. Within 15 minutes he showed me how I can stop my German Shepherd barking and lunging at the door when someone knocks. Lots of practical, sensible strategies to use with Bella before we meet again next week. Rob made everything logical and clear, has good breed knowledge and left me with links to recommended videos on a range of training techniques and scenarios. Would highly recommend Rob and Leeds Dog School to anyone who is looking for balanced, effective training methods to use with their dog.

Ruth came to our house today to help us with our 6 month old jack Russell cross, Albert. He had been bullying the cat, ignoring his name when called, getting distracted by other dogs whilst out on his walks, and generally trying to rule the roost. Ruth demonstrated some amazing techniques and Albert responded really well after just one visit. I can not recommend Leeds Dog School, and Ruth, enough. Absolutely fantastic.

Ruth was excellent with our golden retriever puppy, Benji! She has given us great tips for correction which we will definitely be using and helped us out with walking and commands such as stay and back. We would definitely recommend!

Ruth has visited us twice to help with training our now 7 month old German shepherd. She makes training easy and enjoyable both for us and for our puppy and with perseverance it works. She has helped us tremendously with our puppy training and he wouldn't be as well behaved as he is without Ruth's training and advice. Any problems and/or worries we have are always easily remedied and nothing is too much trouble, she will accommodate you. We would highly recommend Leeds Dog School.

Excellent advice. Our westiepoo has changed from a dog who was barking and jumping up to a calmer and more confident dog. I was very surprised at the change in him in such a short period of time! It was easy after being shown the correct way to train him.

    Thank you Rob and Steve!

Rob came to see my very headstrong 9 month old Border Collie today. The techniques he taught me to show my dog that I am the boss have already started to work he is a lot more well behaved and walks on the lead so much better. Rob is very knowledgeable, approachable and his experience with dogs really shows. I would 100% recommended Rob to anyone who really wants to understand their dog. I’ve tried a lot of trainers but Rob’s techniques really get results.

Ruth came to help with Bruno today. He pulls on the lead and jumps at people, within 10 mins he had stopped jumping! Then the test, a walk, Bruno walked beautifully after 5 mins. We are over the moon with the tools and advice that Ruth gave us, thank you so much 😁He even walked better tonight and didn't jump at our daughter when she got home. Deffo recommend Leeds dog school.
