THE AKITA

There are two separate varieties of Akita: a Japanese strain, commonly called "Akita Inu" ("inu" means "dog" in Japanese), or "Japanese Akita"; and an American strain, known as the "Akita" or "American Akita".

Both have similar characteristics are are not for the faint hearted. They are large powerful dogs which can if not properly trained be aggressive to strangers. Aggression to other dogs is very common and training is absolutely vital. The Akita is eminently trainable but owner training in leadership is most important.

AKITA OBEDIENCE TRAINING

Obedience training is vital for your Akita. At Leeds Dog School we will train your dog to a high level in obedience. We also believe that this should involve the owner at every stage and so our training is one to one with you and your dog. It’s important that your dog obeys your commands and we work with you until you are confident in controlling your dog.

Owners with obedient pets get more satisfaction and have a stronger bond with their pet. As Akitas are powerful dogs owner training is vital so that the owner can enjoy having such an energetic, and strong willed dog.

  • Heel Work –  walk to heel on the lead
  • Heel Work – walk to heel off the lead
  • Recall - return to you when called
  • Down – “down” on command
  • Sit – dog will sit when you stop walking
  • Come –  come to you in the “frontal sit”

AKITA PUPPY TRAINING

Puppy

Training your new puppy should be started as soon as possible from 8 weeks. You’ll be amazed just how quickly they learn and at a very early age and it’s just fun for them and they love it!

Leeds Dog Training School train your puppy on a 1-2-1 visit to your home in Yorkshire rather than in classes as we believe this is much more effective.

  • Toilet Training - we will show you the easiest way to toilet train your puppy
  • Crate Training - we will show you how to crate train your puppy
  • Biting - we will show you how to stop "mouthing" or biting
  • Destructive Behaviour - we will show you how to stop destructive behaviour

STOPPING BAD BEHAVIOUR BY YOUR AKITA

Some trainers believe that giving a dog treats is the best way to train but in our opinion relying on treats exclusively just does not work particularly with an Akita. Your dog may learn how to behave but only does it at because there's a treat at the end of it and many times treats just stop working. Essentially you are bribing the dog to behave properly. Our dog training solves problems with bad behaviour as this is our speciality. Many of the problems are very common and we work with your dog and just as importantly, with you at your home or on a walk, to solve any problems you may have.

  • Stop pulling on the lead
  • Stop lunging at other dogs
  • Stop barking at dogs & people
  • Stop jumping up at people
  • Stop aggression
  • Stop running away and not returning
  • Stop constant barking

We met Ruth yesterday and already have noticed a massive positive change in our frenchies behaviour. We worked on many things including pulling on the lead and behaviour in the home. Ruth really explained why and what we needed to do and we are very happy with the results! Would definitely recommend! A lovely experience for us and our dog.

Fantastic service! I contacted them on the Friday evening and by Saturday afternoon I was booked in for the following weekend for a 1-2-1 session. Ruth cane round to see us and was very professional - listened and explained everything to us and answered all our questions and put us at ease that our problems are fixable and can be sorted. Would highly recommend!

We have a 10 month old border collie who I wanted to train in competitive obedience, however he'd picked up a few bad habits. Therefore I contacted Leeds Dog School and Rob came over to help. It was worth every penny and more, his understanding of dogs behaviour is incredible, and all the issues I had are completely gone. I would recommend Rob to anybody having issues with their dog!

Amazing! Ruth came to see us yesterday and within minutes I knew it was the best decision I made. The improvements are amazing. Biting, jumping up and attacking his lead have all stopped. He is walking so much better too! We will be keeping it up, and recommending you guys to everyone!

Within minutes of Ruth turning up she had Hardy calmed down and doing as he was told. She stopped his jumping and mouthing no problem at all. Taking him for a walk will be much more pleasurable now as Ruth showed us how to control Hardy around other dogs and people, then topped it off by showing us how to get him to drop the ball, he loves chasing the ball and bringing it back but hated giving it back 😂

Thanks Ruth the hour spent with you will definitely improve our lives with Hardy

A lovely lady called Ruth came to my house to help sort out some behavioural issues with my 8 month old wheaten terrier, he is very boisterous when greeting people and on the lead. Ruth was amazing, within 5 mins with her calm manner Eddie had calmed down and was under her control. It is still a work in progress for us but I feel I now have the tools to be more confident and in charge and am seeing positive results.

I can’t thank Ruth enough we had been having issues with our 8 month old English bull terrier, he is a lovely dog but v boisterous and that can scare people. Ruth spent a couple of hours with us teaching us technique to nip this in the bud! 24 hours in and Ernie is responding really well to the training, I would highly recommend the team, very professional with clearly a huge amount of knowledge about dogs..... thank you Ruth well worth the money 👍

Today we had a first visit from Rob to train our Flat Coated Retriever Mack. Within the first 5 minutes Rob had unbelievably changed his behaviour of barking and jumping up and mounting. Mack was also obedient and calm. With his expert guidance of both Mack and us as his owners ,we are thrilled with the incredible results so far . We are so pleased that we contacted Rob.

Ruth came to see us to help stop our 8 week old puppy from biting our hands and feet. In just 1 hour she showed us a really helpful correction technique that he is gradually responding very well to. Ruth was happy to talk through any other issues/aspects and gave us great advice and support overall. Many thanks Ruth and Leeds Dog School, I am sure we'll be calling on you for help again in the near future!

A gentleman called Rob came out to us today to rid our 3 month old German Shepheard of his bad behaviour. Myself and my partner were really struggling with the dog as he was very defiant which was causing a lot of stress in the household. However the method we were shown today has proven to be extremely positive and actually works as our dog has changed in a matter of an hour. We are so happy we chose this company as the results are amazing all we can say is thank you and we will definitely be using them again for on and off lead walking.

I couldn’t recommend Rob and his team highly enough. Rob came to see us a little while ago to help us with our 5 month old Labrador who was being overly boisterous when meeting people and playing. Within minutes she was drastically better and the results have continued to be great! Rob gave us tips for the future on how to overcome potential issues down the road and they have really helped.

For 6 months my 3 Doberman’s have been dragging me around the streets and no matter wot advice I’d been given in the past non of it worked 😩 after just 2 minutes with rob my dog was walking in harmony 🤗 I couldn’t believe it finally I can take my dogs for a walk rather than they take me for a spin. Thank you rob you are amazing xxx
